Bluetooth Home Automation

Our project illustrates how bluetooth technology may be used as a wireless solution in the field of home automation. For proof of concept, we constructed a bluetooth enabled thermostat that is controlled remotely via a web server on a remote platform. The server can be accessed through any internet connection and controls the operation of the thermostat. The thermostat was constructed using a microcontroller, a temperature sensing chip, and simple combinatorial logic. The web server interface was programmed using the Cold Fusion language. The server creates and maintains a database of future settings. Java was used to interact with both the database and the thermostat to transmit and receive temperature settings. The communication between the server and the thermostat was accomplished using BlueRS + bluetooth devices. The bluetooth devices act as a serial connection between the server and the thermostat and link automatically upon power up.
